Simple Safety Update – Issue 22 October 2011

Welcome to our October Simple Safety Update.
This month has been particularly busy and rewarding. We are so very pleased to announce that as part of helping you manage safety in the simplest possible way in what are very confusing times we have become the Victoria/ Tasmania distributor for Workplace Safety Australia’s OHS Update Service. As a safety professional I am always concerned about staying up to date. Once I saw this product I knew my prayers were answered and those of our clients as well.

We will be in touch with all our clients to make sure they have the opportunity to make understanding safety and staying up to date a piece of cake and cost effective. The cost of an annual subscription for your organisation is less than 1 day of professional consulting services. Have a look at http://www.worksafe.com.au and we will be in touch to arrange a free trial for you.

OHS News – SOS Client Wins WorkSafe Award

Our client Arvin Meritor was awarded the WorkSafe Award for Best OHS Committee. Simple OHS Solutions worked with Arvin to significantly improve how they consulted with their workers and developed a system to ensure that workers and their managers are the key in identifying OHS risks and taking action to control them. Everyone at SOS congratulates the team at Arvin Meritor for their hard work and dedication to improving their safety.

Harmonisation Countdown – The State of Play

• Victoria has delayed implementation to Jan 2013
• NSW and QLD are pressing onto the start date of January 2012,
• Tassie has committed to the process
• SA is debating their bill
• WA is not likely to be on board before 2013
• NT has not taken any action to date
• ACT is likely to on board by Jan 2012

All I know is and have been saying all along lets not worry too much about where the legislation is at but keep on with the job of managing safety simply and effectively. As another famous blonde once said it won’t happen overnight but it will happen.

Did you know?

  • WorkSafe Victoria has a 96% success rate when prosecuting under the OHS Act 2004.
  •  In the last 25 years fines for breaches of the OHS Act in NSW have increased from a maximum of $50,000 to $3 million under harmonised law.
  • The first jail term (3 years suspended) was handed down in Victoria this year for breaching the OHS Act 2004.
