Simple Safety Update - Issue 10 October 2010
OHS News - Harmonisation
Well it’s on already and the new harmonised OHS legislation is still 12 months away. New South Wales’ threat to withdraw from the harmonisation process has sent everyone into a tail spin and sadly has confirmed that when it comes to politics nothing is out of bounds. The harmonisation of OHS laws is seen as the most positive step forward in OHS for many years and will bring relief to employers, better compliance and safer work places. As the NSW Business Chamber boss Greg Pattison has been quoted as saying employers are desperate for some certainty around harmonisation. If the fear is that not allowing Unions to prosecute employers will lead to a soft approach, I suggest Ms Kenneally speak to some employers who have been on the receiving end of a prosecution from WorkSafe Victoria, with a success rate of 96% and fines in the $100,000’s I think her fears are unfounded and ill informed.

Step 10 – Incident Reporting
An Incident Reporting process is an essential part of identifying hazards and reducing risks.
Follow this month’s Simple Safety Schedule steps below:
To Do:
- Decide on what you want reported incidents, injuries, near misses, hazards
- Develop a form including what happened, what was the outcome, and what can be done to prevent the incident again.
- Allocate responsibility for ensuring forms are completed and preventative actions are followed up
- Train employees and Supervisors in the process
- Set up an incident register to record all reported incidents
- Use the information collected to find trends, outcomes and areas to focus on improving
