Simple Safety Schedule

Let SOS guide you through the steps you need to take to manage OHS and meet legislative obligations in the Simple Safety Schedule.

Step 3: Roles & Responsibilities

You will have allocated tasks to people in your Health & Safety Plan. Have you linked these to job roles? For example, a supervisor maybe responsible for ensuring the traffic management plan is adhered to, and protective equipment is worn. A manager may be responsible for ensuring safety is tabled at management meetings. Allocating responsibilities to job roles and including them in job descriptions will ensure everyone knows who's doing what and people can be held accountable if actions are not carried out.

Health & safety responsibilities can include:

Directors

  • Monitoring safety performance

Chief Executive Officer/General Manager

  • Safety leadership
  • Resources
  • Legislative compliance
  • Reporting to the Board on safety performance

Operational/Department Managers

  • Implementing the safety system – policies/procedures/safe work practices
  • Hazard control
  • Resource allocation

Team Leaders/Supervisors

  • Supervising for safety
  • Compliance with policies/procedures/safe work practices

Human Resources Department

  • System administration and maintenance
  • OHS Committee operation
  • Record keeping

Employees

  • Identifying and reporting hazards
  • Reporting injuries
  • Following safety policies and procedures
  • Ensuring their own safety and that of others

These are examples of responsibilities - they should be developed specifically to suit your organisation's roles and structure.
